Day 89

Wednesday 27th July 2016

Time to move on again. We left the Helford river at about 6:30am as we were going to go to Truro.

Truro is at the top of the Fal estury and as it it tidal and dries out at low tide, we had to be there at high tide which was about 11:30am. It was drizzling when we left and carried on until we entered the Fal estury. We followed the river up to Malpas which is just outside Truro. We then had to pick up a mooring bouy and wait for a little more water. We set off again at about 10:15am and very carefully followed the river up towards Truro. We soon spotted the Cathedral.

We radioed ahead to the Harbour master to see how much water was at Truro. He thought we could just do it and had a nice space for us alongside another boat. It is a very narrow channel up to Truro with lots of bends in it and you need to know where the channel is. We just got to the top and saw our space for the night when we very gently ran into the mud. WE could have got there but there would have been less water the following day and we could have been stuck for a few days. The decision was made very quickly to turn around and go back down the river whilst we could!
(We had tried to get up last year and managed it but there was not space to stay overnight so we moored up for an hour and then went back down the river.)

I should really say here that we did go aground on our way back down the river! We were following the channel very carefully and the wind blew us sideways and we ended up in the mud. Luckily for us a small motor boat was going by and managed to pull us off! We were very pleased!

Back down the river to Malpass again and we had just moored up when we saw the Harbour master was collecting rubbish from the pontoon along with our harbour fees and we happened to mention that we were going into Truro and he very kindly offered us a lift there – Fantastic!

We had a lovely walk around Truro and a delightful walk back to Malpas along the river bank.
