Day 70

Friday 8th July 2016

We decided more island exploring was on the cards. The Manx buses are wonderful. For £7 you can get an all day bus travel ticket.

We set off with our friends Susan and Ian on the 10:25am bus to Castletown. We got off at the airport and the boys went to visit the aviation museum there.

Then it was back on the bus to Port St Mary. Port St Mary is on the south west part of the island. Another delightful sleepy town. We could visit here but there were only mooring bouys and a harbour wall. Both would mean wither the dingy or a climb up a ladder for Jazz.
Back on the bus to Castletown. We found a pub with a roof top terrace and had lunch is the sunshine - wonderful. We explored Castletown and found the castle and the market cross

Back on the bus to Douglas and we stayed on and went along the promenade. There were lots of lovely Victorian buildings - you could just imagine it in its heyday.

We now wanted to get to Ramsey. Bus to Onchan where we saw the Gold letter box for cyclist Pete Kenaugh (Thanks to Jonny for the info!)

Another bus to Ramsey. We passed the Laxey wheel - The Laxey Wheel (also known as Lady Isabella) is a large waterwheel built into the hillside above the village of Laxey in the Isle of Man. Designed by Robert Casement, the wheel has a 72-foot-6-inch (22.1 m) diameter, is 6 feet (1.83 m) wide and revolves at approximately three revolutions per minute. It was built in 1854 to pump water from the mineshafts and named "Lady Isabella" after the wife of Lieutenant Governor Charles Hope, who was the island's governor at that time. The Laxey Wheel is the largest working waterwheel in the world.[citation needed] The wheel was used to pump water from the Glen Mooar part of the ‘Great Laxey Mines’ industrial complex.

As we travelled to Ramsey we looked out and were able to see the mountains of England in the distance.

Ramsey is another delightful town. I was very pleased to see that the Island does in fact have Brownies!

As we were wandering around Ramsey we saw this lovely statue

and a Manx cat!

Back on another bus - the seventh one that day! to Peel. We travelled across country and saw some of the TT route. We could see the coast line and out to see the Scottish highlands, Ireland and the Mountains of Mourne. Apparently from the top of Snaefell, on a clear day you can see the 7 kingdoms of Man - Isle of Man, England, Ireland, Scotland, heaven and Neptune. We didn't go up Snaefell but we did get to see the 7 kingdoms in one day.

Forgot to say - someone needed their own bus ticket!
